VERBOXIOUS: the trouble with words. 2009.06.16

"mining the empty meanings between humankind's inarticulate breaths since 2007"

No, It's Not All Good.

Lying, cheating, and stealing are not good. Bullying others is not good. Bad things happening to basically kind people are definitely not good.

And, while I'm gassing on like a tired old crank here, how about bad things happening to plants and animals that are at the butt-end of humankind's ignorance, vanity, and greed?

I especially like the current definition #4 of "It's All Good" at THIS LINK at urbandictionary.com. Basically, it states everything I could have crammed into a full-length essay within this post.

(As Mark Twain is attributed with saying, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.")

Wishing you a beautiful day,

Bill Brent

TypePad to the rescue

One must dare to show what he wants. You have to go and ask for things rather than wait for them to happen.
   --Madonna

So, I asked for what I wanted, and thanks to an understanding staffer at TypePad, this blog will continue, since I was able to negotiate a discount I can live with.

Which leads me to the question: Okay, now what? We've done Hawaiian pictures on this blog. We've done funny links to YouTube and other such places. Lots of inspirational stuff too.

The funny thing is, much of my life is in flux right now, and I can't even talk about it here, cuz some parts of my life don't belong on this blog. I am definitely becoming more private as I move through life. I guess that living on an island in the middle of the Pacific can do that to someone.

However, I started a Facebook account recently, which strikes me as odd, since Facebook affords no privacy (and I hardly need the distraction). Furthermore, since we are all linked within seven degrees of separation, then in theory, everyone on Facebook will eventually come up for friend status. Which leads me to wonder: Why can't I just friend everyone in the Facebook universe, all at once? It would save so much time.

Oh, I guess it's like a big Easter egg hunt, then. It would be no fun if you left all the eggs out in plain view.

Anyway. Mostly I just wanted to respond to the queries I've gotten about this blog. I'll post something more bloggy when I'm feeling more bloggy.

Wishing you a beautiful day,

Bill Brent

On mass delusion, part 2

HERE IS A FOLLOW-UP to LAST WEEK'S POST regarding the notion of IDEOLOGIES AS A CONTAGIOUS MENTAL DISEASE.

I have some thoughts I'd like to share on this topic, but I'm letting them form a bit further before I compose an essay, or simply list my thoughts in a more ordered fashion than below.

Central to this constellation of ideas, though, is my realization that if we can construe society as an addict, then we can also construe society itself as the drug. Social approval, for instance, and in particular: the need to at least appear to SOCIALLY CONFORM (use the drug) in order to be compensated (for example, get the funds that enable us to keep using the drug). In other words, late-stage capitalism is akin to late-stage drug use.

So what's the solution? Well, for starters, I've noticed more of my friends have been bartering lately for goods and services. (Here in Hawaii, it's fairly easy, since many folks can grow or raise food on the land they inhabit.)

We all drop in and drop out of the mass culture in various ways at various times. Heck, sometimes you have to OPT OUT, just to avoid the mass marketers. But there are other ways than simply removing yourself from lists. For instance, forming unpredictable, one-time tribes, such as GUERRILLA QUEER BAR in San Francisco circa Y2K, keeps the landscape freer, more spontaneous, and less of a target. As you can see by clicking on the link, Guerrilla Queer Bar is a great example of a meme that has spread, virus-like, to many other cities.

Any other ideas? Feel free to chime in.

Wishing you a beautiful day,

Bill Brent

keywords: Society is an addict. Society is a drug. Conditional tribe, tribalism, pack behavior, spontaneous swarm.
